About Us

Our Vision

A safe, healthy, happy and interdependent community.

Our Mission

Strengthening children, families and community… investing in our future.

Values

At Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata, we:

  • Honour and live through the Seven Sacred Teachings and the Mino-Bimaadiziwin that was developed by our young people.
  • Believe in the inherent good and gifts of community and staff members.
  • Believe in family, and take a broad and Indigenous view of family that is inclusive of extended family, community and the culture within which we thrive.
  • Believe in and defend our children.
  • Care for our staff with loyalty and commitment.
  • Recognize the right to Reciprocity – it is important to be able to openly ask and receive help and resources.
  • Recognize and acknowledge community members and trust in their actions.
  • Put people before paper – community, family and staff come first, while the requirements of the systems that support us come second.
  • Work from the HEART.

Mino-Bimaadiziwin

Formerly our Code of Honour, the seven teachings of Mino-Bimaadiziwin were created by our youth to support a culture of respect and reciprocity. At Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata, we:

  • Tell the truth.
  • Seek only peace.
  • Keep our word.
  • Stand up for what is right.
  • Treat each other with respect.
  • Listen with our hearts, then speak from our hearts.
  • Support one another in Mino-Bimaadiziwin.
We all work together to help one another

Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata

Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata (pronounced Maa- Ma- Wii- Jii- Ta- Daa) means “we all work together to help one another” in Anishinaabemowin.

Established in 1984, Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata is a Grandmother in the Winnipeg family of community service providers with more than 40 years of experience working with Indigenous families. We are community people helping other community people reclaim our inherent roles and responsibilities as Indigenous caregivers and the most important teachers of our children.

Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre is a strength—and value-based family resource organization that delivers community-based programs and services within the philosophy embodied in our name. Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre believes in accountability, transparency, and effective resource use. For us, this means working with our families, partners, funders, and governments to create community-based solutions that build local capacity for self- and community care.

Community
Care

Natural gathering places for Winnipeg’s urban Indigenous community are community-driven, culturally relevant prevention and support-based programs that include drop-in, emergency services, workshops, training, and volunteer opportunities.

Caring For
Our Relatives

Protect children and honour the sacred bond of families with their children by ensuring Indigenous children remain connected to their families and community.

Youth
Development

Honours youth as the current and future generation of leaders through culture, education, recreation, empowerment, training, employment and leadership development opportunities.

Indigenous
Knowledge

Returning to our Indigenous values and practices of caring for one another. Specialized programs to lead truth and reconciliation initiatives and our leadership role to support a strong sister organization network.
