Position: Astum Api Niikinaahk Support Helper
Classification: Part-Time Weekends Saturday – Sunday 8 am- 8 pm
Location: Astum Api Niikinaahk
Salary: Subject to Qualifications
Background:
The Support Helper – Ensures the safety of all residents and staff, performing such duties as screening telephone calls, monitoring the entrance, securing the building, and undertaking rounds as required. The incumbent will act in accordance with the Ma Mawi Code of Honour and Astum Api Niikinaahk’ s service philosophy of providing trauma informed harm reduction support and assistance to our residents. They will encourage the residents to view themselves as a critical part of the Astum Api Niikinaahk community.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Fosters a sense of home and community at Astum Api Niikinaahk.
- Creates opportunities that fulfill the Astum Api Niikinaahk Housing goals of Belonging and Influence.
- Monitors and supports the well-being of each resident on a regular basis including completing health and suite checks to ensure safety, as per program policy, reporting all incidences and hazards to the coordinator
- Performs aftercare and follow-up support services to participants that are reaching the final stages of being successfully housed.
- In addition to providing support services other duties include guiding behaviors, monitoring, medication distribution, and first aid.
- De-escalates and diffuses any incidents which may occur between residents, promoting a positive and calm environment.
- Walks the grounds regularly throughout the night to ensure gate is locked and no visitors or non-residents are on the property.
- Investigates any potential hazards such as smoke, noise, alarms.
- Calls police in emergency situations, coordinates response, alerts on call person, and completes critical incident reports.
QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Post-secondary education in human services.
- Previous lived experience and recovery would be an asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of the complex issues affecting men, women and gender diverse populations and people with disabilities who are homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness.
- Knowledge of the complex issues regarding Indigenous homelessness.
- Demonstrated experience or training in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and risk management.
- Training and experience in trauma informed care and harm reduction practices.
- Trained in crisis intervention and risk management strategies –CPR, Mental Health First Aid; Naloxone administration; AED defibrillator use; medication distribution; food handling certificate.
- Non-violence crisis intervention training is required.
- Class 5 Drivers License and Current Drivers abstract
- Must be vaccinated against COVID 19
