Position Title: Student Support Helper-Yellow Shawl Program

Classification: Full-Time Permanent

Location: Truth and Reconciliation Site 445 King Street

Background: The Student Support Helper is responsible for providing case management and direct support services on a flexible schedule day/evening/weekend for additional care/supervision to youth within the program.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITY:

Assist with the delivery of the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre program which is in partnership with sister organizations can house up to 14 youth between the ages of 16 through 21 that are in need of an innovative youth housing program focused on providing safe and supportive housing.

Provide support to the Student Housing Mentor with the daily activities within the program and advocate for the youth with either school or place of employment.

  • Act as a positive Role Model for the students.
  • Ensure the safety of all students.
  • Plan activities/cultural ceremonies
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and consistent behaviour with all students.
  • Assist in the acquisition of equipment, supplies, and resources.
  • Assisting youth to make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Assisting youth to effectively communicate, problem-solve and resolve conflict.
  • Assist students to gain skills for successful independent living.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Team Leader/Designate.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Indigenous youth and their families.
  • Establishing trusting relationships with youth to improve their health and well-being.
  • Ability to use strength-based and solution-focused and non-judgmental approaches.
  • Ability to take initiative and to take direction and work well in a team setting.
  • Flexibility to workdays, evenings and weekends as may be required.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and basic skills in database, email, and social media.
  • Understanding of Indigenous customs, experience, traditions, and values is an asset.
  • CPR and First Aid valid Certification.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License and access to a vehicle would be an asset.
  • All applicants must provide a criminal record check and child abuse check.
