Position Title: Cultural Activities Youth Helper

Classification: Permanent Full-Time

Location: Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Youth Program

Background:

The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre is currently seeking an individual for the position of Cultural Activities Youth Helper. The Cultural Activities Youth Helper position, within our Youth team, entails overseeing diverse cultural programming to reflect the richness of various Indigenous cultural traditions. Responsibilities include guiding youth towards healthier choices and fostering a deeper connection to culture through engaging activities. Additionally, organizing and coordinating activities for the Powwow Club is integral to the role, ensuring its continued success and participation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with community members, elders, and cultural experts to develop a calendar of diverse cultural activities tailored to youth interests and needs.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops, events, and outings that promote cultural awareness, traditional practices, and artistic expression.
  • Provide mentorship and support to youth participants, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in their cultural identity.
  • Facilitate structured programming of the Rising Sun Pow Wow Club, ensuring a safe, engaging, and educational environment.
  • Promote and foster leadership skills among youth helpers, providing guidance and mentorship as needed.
  • Organize the teachings of Pow wow singing and dancing in accordance with traditional protocols, demonstrating respect and cultural sensitivity.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Combination of education and lived experience in youth development, cultural education, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and respect for Indigenous cultures, traditions, and history, specifically related to Pow wow singing, dancing, and regalia creation.
  • Familiarity with Pow wow protocols and procedures.
  • Proven ability to facilitate groups, demonstrating strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups of youth.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to the principles outlined in Ma Mawi’s Code of Honour.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Must have current CPR, First Aid certification; training in Naloxone & Overdose Prevention strongly preferred.

Preferred: Experience working in an Indigenous community or organization. Understands and can communicate in one or more Indigenous languages.
