Position: Support Helper

Background:

The Support Helper facilitates day-to-day communal living among residents of Astum Api Niikinaahk through emotional support, information, referrals, and advocacy. The incumbent will act in accordance with the Ma Mawi Code of Honour and Astum Api Niikinaahk’s service philosophy of providing trauma-informed harm reduction support and assistance to our residents. They will encourage the residents to view themselves as a critical part of the Astum Api Niikinaahk community.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fosters a sense of home and community at Astum Api Niikinaahk.
  • Creates opportunities that fulfill the Astum Api Niikinaahk Housing goals of Belonging and Influence.
  • Assists the residents in acquiring all necessary documents (identification, health cards, etc.)
  • Attends to appointments, resource centers, and other collateral resources with residents as identified in their action plan.
  • Accesses resources (E.I.A., health services, etc.) and provides advocacy for residents to facilitate their individualized care plans.
  • Provide timely support and direction for all phases of the move-in/move-out process.
  • Walks with prospective residents to prepare for the move-in process to their homes at Astum Api Niikinaahk.
  • Research and provide housing availabilities for residents when they are ready to move out.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in human services.
  • Previous lived experience and recovery would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the complex issues affecting men, women, and gender-diverse populations and people with disabilities who are homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness.
  • Knowledge of the complex issues regarding Indigenous homelessness.
  • Demonstrated experience or training in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and risk management.
  • Non-violence crisis intervention training is required.
  • Training in trauma-informed care and harm reduction practices.
  • Trained in CPR, Mental Health First Aid; Naloxone administration; AED defibrillator use; medication distribution; food handling certificate
  • Class 5 Drivers License and Current Drivers abstract
